Protective Characteristics

At St Andrew's Church of England Primary School, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all members of our school family. This page explains the protective characteristics defined under the UK Equality Act 2010, which guide our approach to equality, respect, and dignity across our school community.

Understanding Protective Characteristics

The Equality Act 2010 sets out nine protected characteristics that are safeguarded by law to prevent discrimination, harassment, and victimisation in education, employment, and public services. These protections ensure that everyone is treated fairly and with respect, in accordance with our school’s vision:  At St Andrew's, we embrace this principle by fostering compassion, respect, and justice for all.

The nine protected characteristics are:

Age
Protection covers people of all ages, recognising that everyone, from the youngest child to the oldest adult, deserves equal respect and opportunities.

Disability
This includes any physical or mental impairment that substantially affects daily life over the long term. We strive to provide an accessible and supportive environment, ensuring all pupils, including those with SEND, can thrive.

Gender Reassignment
Protection applies to anyone who is proposing to undergo, undergoing, or has undergone gender reassignment, supporting their right to be accepted and valued.

Marriage and Civil Partnership
This protects couples, including same-sex couples, from discrimination in employment, ensuring equality for all families within our community.

Pregnancy and Maternity
Safeguards are in place for those who are pregnant or on maternity leave, ensuring they receive fair treatment and support.

Race
This includes colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin. We celebrate the rich diversity of our community and promote friendship and trust among all pupils and families.

Religion or Belief
Protection covers any religious or philosophical beliefs, as well as the right to have no belief, respecting the individual faith and values of everyone at St Andrew’s.

Sex
Protection for men and women ensures equality and fairness across all school activities and opportunities.

Sexual Orientation
This protects individuals regardless of whether they are attracted to the same sex, opposite sex, or both, promoting an environment of acceptance and kindness.

How Our Values Shape Our Commitment

Our school vision, inspired by John 13:34 — “Love one another, as I have loved you” — reminds us to live out these values daily. We encourage our pupils and staff to demonstrate:

  • Compassion and forgiveness by understanding and supporting each other’s differences;
  • Courage and endurance in standing against discrimination and injustice;
  • Respect and thankfulness for the diverse backgrounds and experiences that enrich our school community;
  • Friendship and service by creating a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels safe and valued.

Our commitment extends beyond words to practical actions, such as inclusive teaching practises, accessible facilities, and respectful dialogue, ensuring every child and family feels part of our school family.

What This Means for Parents and the Community

As parents and community members, your partnership is vital in promoting these values. We encourage you to:

  • Talk openly with your child about the importance of kindness and respect for all people.
  • Support our inclusive ethos by celebrating diversity at home and in the wider community.
  • Reach out to school staff if you have any concerns or suggestions on how we can better support equality and inclusion.
